International women’s day is usually a somewhat tame affair in the United States. This year however a general women’s strike was held on March 8th to not only raise awareness about the importance of women’s rights, in a world that has traditionally suppressed such rights, but to also actively oppose many of the anti-women policies and rhetoric President Trump has been advocating.
Taking place in over 30 countries women were urged to take the day off of work and for the men in their lives to show support by taking care of kids and other responsibilities women are usually saddled with. In San Francisco thousands joined together at the Justin Herman Plaza on the Embarcadero followed by a march through the Financial District. Speeches were heard by various speakers including trans women and sex workers to raise awareness to challenges and biases that they face in their daily lives.
