Big Sky Hunting is a photographic project which starting from the astronomical depiction investigates the potentialities and the limits of the photographic medium and of the representation.
The expression "Big Sky Hunting" refers to a search without an end and It contains the word “hunting” which doesn't mean the shooting practice but a form of territorial command. It states the man’s obsession to control a territory in order to transform it in a known landscape.
Photography represents the main instrument that allows us to explore, inquire, map and travel outer-space. Since his invention the photographic medium has been related to astronomy. Until that moment the human kind had looked at the Cosmo as something immeasurable, something sublime, which put us in front of an acute awareness of our limitation of our own ignorance. Documenting it we've started to transform it. We've began to build a modest sublime, a fragmentary sublime. In spite of the technological complexity of the devices involved, the infinite majesty of the universe in its fact is impossible to fully picture adequately. The photons comprising the picture have been traveling for 13 billion years to reach the mirrored array. Despite the primal beauty of such imagery the unfathomability of time and distance suggested by the images brings us into abstraction. The stunning pictures of spatial objects aren’t often made by actual cameras. They are the result of processed data, digitalization and scientist's interpretation.
Big Sky Hunting in the same way is the result of appropriation and alteration of several materials. Through the use of found materials from the 70's and 80's , original images and objects the series attempts to design new maps for the infinite based on obsolete informations and mistaken fragments .
Big Sky Hunting inquires at space's borders where the research become impossible, where our defenses go missing and every attempt of control is useless.
The images are mapping undiscovered territories, depicting nerveless technologies, telling us about already lived futures.
Along his journey the big sky hunter come across the outermost lights, up to where the representation depicts unknown elements, where there is still space for the imagination, where complete acknowledgment is not given.
