Fat Joe

These images are studies of Joseph Macias taking a shower after chain gang duty in Estrella Jail in Phoenix, Arizona. Joe was comfortable with me filming him in the shower. There is a scene in my film where Fat Joe is rapping in the shower. It fascinated me that Joe had the depth of character to be funny even in the most miserable of places. Joe is good humored about his weight and knows obesity is a serious condition that affects millions of people. Joe was the under dog on the chain gang but he kept his sense of humor about himself. In photography I believe in love at first sight, and though I am not attracted to Joe in any sexual way. I did love him at first sight.
