The idea to capture girls behind a glass was born to emphasize the modern young mothers frailty living within an aggressive society like ours. Since the teenage years is already a period of big phisical and psicological changes, It’s obvious that a pregnancy during these stages of life involves a certain number of issues, mostly at a psicological and interpersonal level. For some young mothers, maternity can be a happy event but, in most cases, the birth is seen too premature and can be rejected or experienced with fear and pain… they are worried to deal the subject with their parents fearing their reaction, the father’s and his family emotional response, the need to face a gynaecologist, to tell what happened to their classmates, teachers and so on. Many girls in this delicate situation feel lost, filled with insecurity that can easily become a sense of guilt.
My project is dedicated to these young girls, feeling judged by the society and people they usually rely on like their families, there are, in fact, some cases in which the parents refuse their daughters, they stop talking to them, feeling ashamed of them and, in many cases, leaving them completely alone.
These young girls frailty, no more little girls but not yet women, takes them to a state of shame and humiliation, the modern society seems to be unable to deal with this issue and the early age pregnancy, which was seen as a normal fact years ago, nowadays is considered to be a scandal.
I choose to face this subject throught a portrait behind a glass to completely overturn the point of view.
The girls are friends of mine, I met them on the street or they are my friend’s daughters. With their gaze, my gaze, are now judging the society that blames the young mothers. The aim is to make anyone who feels observed by those eyes think about the birth event as a joyful moment and never as a shame, even if it happens in a delicate period such as the teenage years. It’s up to us to not leave them alone, not judge them or point at them on the street but expecially at home.
