Frozen in time... Fidel Castro died on November 25, 2016. In Miami the expat community cheered and celebrated. In Cuba the country mourned. I arrived two days later. I choose to ignore politics. Instead my photography looks at the people of Cuba .
Shibui, shibumi, or shibusa are Japanese words which refer to a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle, and unobtrusive. Essentially, the aesthetic ideal of shibumi seeks out events, performances, people or objects that are beautiful in a direct and simple way, without being flashy. For me, it describes the flawed beauty that is today's Cuba. It provides the backdrop for telling my stories .
