Notes from Underground

The Rio de Janeiro subway carries approximately eight hundred thousand passengers per day. A crowd of strangers surrendered to their thoughts, to the weariness and agony of the great cities. In an age of insecurity, mistrust is the general rule that guides urban relationships. We hardly look at each other directly, we avoid contact. Each one lives in his private, absent, distant world.
