This essay resembles the few years I spent in Liverpool where I started my street photography.
Royal De Lux, the French marionette street theatre company performed twice already in Liverpool. First in 2012, the ‘Sea Odyssey’ was put together in April for the centenary of the sunken RMS Titanic. Titanic was the flag ship ocean-liner of the White Star Line or also known as Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, that was founded in Liverpool in the mid 1800s. The Titanic started its maiden journey from Southampton on the 10th of April 1912 to New York City, but it sank 4 days later before reaching its destination. The story to remember the event was about a little giant girl who was waiting for her giant uncle to arrive back from the sunken Titanic.
The Second time, in 2014, with the title ‘Memories Of August 1914’ the event was redesigned for Liverpool’s World War I commemorations. Many wore the ‘poppy’ symbol for the many lives that were taken from Merseyside. The giant marionettes once again walked around the city in a few days to finally get together in Newsham Park for the stories of the Grandmother of her 1914’s summer memories, and than and sail away together a day later.
For both years the number of spectators reached twice the population of Liverpool, to pay their tributes for the centenaries …and for the highly entertaining theatre.
It is hard to decide what is more entertaining, the giant puppet show or the size of crowd it can bring together such a unique event.
These events truly resembled the cultural vibe and atmosphere what it means to live in the one and only Scouse Capitol, Liverpool.
