BAORI

Imagine suddenly the ground opens up, confronting you with an upside-down ziggurat dug into the earth. Hypnotic rythms are formed by patterns of steps, leading you down as far as the water level allows. Fascinated by the typical architecture of step wells, we started our photographic journey in India called BAORI (baori meaning ‘step well’ in Hindi). In their original state, a stepwell was not just a water source of a spiritual nature, but a sanctuary for bathing and meditation. Nowadays, since water supplies are differently organized, more and more stepwells are being neglected and suffer from decay. Parts of invaluable Indian cultural heritage are being threatened. What we hope to achieve, is to get renewed attention for the step wells by showing the stunning beauty of these creations. Our way to do so is to create multiple layered images which show our poetic view on a sometimes concealed reality.
