Tales From Japan is both a cultural and emotional exploration of someone whose country does not belong to them. Beyond the theme of each individual image, they are all threaded together with the heart of a woman who is "third culture".
Not being ethnically Japanese, using the themes of the country has aroused many questions. The goal behind the theme is to expand the idea of what it means to be "from" somewhere, despite not fitting the mold of what one may expect.
Besides the continuous theme of the Japanese aesthetic, Reylia Slaby blends her life's experiences into her art. Her work is empirical, taking both her distresses and her joys, she strives to capture the experiences that shaped her, and to transform even the negative moments into something of beauty.
