Double Standard

Gloria Houng’s current practice includes photography, video and installation. The photographs are meant as playful experiments in subverting a viewer’s understanding and perception in what is being depicted. They have a deliberately “deskilled” nature that emphasizes the tension between the staged and impromptu. The photographs are documentations of framed and reframed moments that straddle the narrative and performative. They are not digitally manipulated–they are “straight” photographs. The Double Standard series, set in and around hotels and their rooms, are photographs of photographs, creating a deliberate confusion in the spatial construction of what is depicted. Narratively, they encompass events that are part travelogue, part autobiographical. Performatively, they are willful actions that mirror interior dialogues.
