The ancient Sacred Way in Athens, Greece, was a road approximately 22km long, connecting Athens with the town of Elefsina. Its route is closely connected to a solemn procession, one taken by people looking to be initiated into one of the biggest ceremonies in Ancient Greece: the Elefsinian Mysteries. From approximately 1600 BC to 392 AD, people from all over Greece walked the Sacred Way, finally receiving their initiation at the temple of the goddess Demeter in Elefsina.
Nowadays, the road keeps the same name and, to a certain degree, the route is the same as the one walked by the initiates of the past. I created a portrait of the Sacred Way combining parts of the mythology with its modern day reality. Alongside this topographical portrait another one emerges, that of a tiny part of modern Greek society.
