My collection is titled "In the Leaving" and represents how I see the aftermath of abandonment, whether it be emotional, physical, moral, or cultural. The first two images are from the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital in New York City which had been shuttered for years and only recently opened for private visits. Although now empty and full of dusty air and curling paint, the hospital once provided first rate medical care to immigrants, offering them hope after they were , in many cases, abandoned by their home country. I ended with a photograph also from the Ellis Island hospital showing the shadow of two ghostly visitors, conveying the hopeful notion that we are not alone. In between, I photographed loss as I see it relating to love, childhood, and self.
