Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union since 1940 till 1990. In 1965 a proposal to evict homesteads to a bigger settlements was made. The official aims of such project were to put the agriculture into the higher level and create new socialist type residential areas. A scope of another kind cannot be contravened either: to destroy traditional rural communities, centuries-old cultural land heritage, customs, and traditions.
Photograph series “The Loners“ was created by portraying the trees - the remaining monuments of the former homesteads which were saved by persistent people during the negotiation with melioration workers. It is a reminder to all of us of our parents, grandparents, and forefathers who used to live in the areas which now have turned into empty fields.
