Astronaut Space Tools as Sculpture

In a mid 1950’s issue of Fortune Magazine, the photojournalist Walker Evans chose to photograph the ordinariness of hardware tools. Some 60 years later for Discover Magazine, I photographed the extraordinary one-of-a-kind tools used by astronauts in space as unique sculptural objects. Although their form may not typically match function, I experienced these tools as uniquely fabricated shaped pieces. They are custom printed on fine art papers; giclee mural size prints more than sixty inches tall. Eight custom printed mural size prints from some of the images displayed here are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC.
