There is simply something alive in the gritty ancient cobble stones of Sham Sho Po and in the shimmering glass and steel canyons of downtown Hong Kong. Each ripe with raw visual material, modern and archaic forms, light, color and a plethora of life and activity at street level.
I search for moments, atmosphere, line and the repetition of shape often using advertising and signage as vernacular anchors. I search out the interactions of color and the convergence and chaos of street life.
From one photograph I set about digitally abstracting and rebuilding the image. I deconstruct and rearrange line and form. Much like a painter adds layer upon layer of paint onto a canvas. It is as if the elements were building blocks culminating into another conception of visual experience. I want the work to befuddle and amaze, to provide a roller coaster of intrigue and to still dig deep into the details of the many worlds within each piece. All of this was much like my experience walking the foreign streets in Hong Kong.
Surprise and serendipity are at the heart of both creating the original photograph and in the process of discovering what that image can become. Hong Kong will forever be one of the most profound experiences of my life and art.
