The Malta-based NGO Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) was the first private organisation to commence migrant rescue operations in the Mediterranean back in 2014. Several NGOs have followed in their footsteps. Throughout April and beginning of May of 2017, the photographer, embedded on the MOAS ship Phoenix, took part in several migrant rescue missions a few miles of the Libyan coast. Over 3,000 migrants were saved during that period, but there were also many fatalities, including the recovery of the body of one man who was murdered by smugglers. However, the sight of so many rescued babies, the youngest only 12 days old, became a symbol of hope for the rescue teams.
