Connection
Marcel Proust, a French novelist said, ” The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but seeing with new eyes.” Inspired by the likes of Alfred Stieglitz and Aaron Siskind, whose work exemplifies the concept of seeing with new eyes, I want to encourage this act of seeing with new eyes. “Connection,” is truly about seeing anew, looking within.
Built into the very make up of our humanity, we long to connect with those who have come before, those around us now, and those who will follow us. We do so by way of what Carl Jung calls the collective unconscious. It is here that our base, primal reality exists and is shared by all people. This is where I want to share the experience I feel as I make my art. I want to explore the connections that are inherent in our humanity using the five sacred symbols (shapes) expressed within my images.
The universality of meaning and universal recognition of the circle, square, triangle, spiral, and cross are the perfect subjects to make this connection. These symbols form the basis for this project, as they work together with the unconscious mind to link us with the rest of humanity.
These shapes are found in every day, common ways we often do not recognize, but they still influence and imprint on our psyche. I have taken these shapes (symbols) and combined them in layers, manipulating the light, contrast and color in various ways in order for a conscious and unconscious connection to be made by way of the collective unconscious.
