In fourth grade I looked through a microscope and encountered an unknown world in a small sliver of onion. What I saw had a profound impact on me. I realized that what I see is not necessarily all that can be seen.
This series of photographs began with collecting organic matter found on walks close to my home. As the organic objects dry out they become increasingly gestural. I randomly arrange the objects on layers of glass and photograph them through a variety of lenses. What I see through the lens is another world. I search for an image that evokes a clear physical “feeling”—something that provokes a memory. The sensation of finding the right image is much like the recalling of a dream that lies just under the surface as you wake.
I approach the process of photography with painterly concerns and this impacts how I use the camera and how I compose the images.
