In recent years the popular holiday destination Chios, situated in the Aegean Sea, has become a gateway for refugees heading to Europe. Most refugees arrive from Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq. More than 7000 people keep waiting for months or even years for their asylum application to be processed.
The following series of photographs is the result of a 7-day visit in Chios with the Swiss NGO «Be Aware And Share» in April of 2017.
For young refugees on Chios the daily routine is determined by boredom, dullness and uncertainty. They often miss out on a daily structure, on learning opportunities and normal social interactions. The photographs show a life «left in limbo»: Agonizing waiting in a temporary home on an island which can feel like a prison sometimes.
