Tomas : From A suicide bomber to a soccer player

Thomas, an 11-year old Yazidi boy from Shingal, is treated at a TSP (Trauma Stabilization Point) in West Mosul. Thomas was kidnapped by ISIL three years ago, taken away from his parents and held hostage in Mosul. He is searching for his sister Saadeh, whom he hasn't seen in a month.

Tomas is eventually sent to the Euphrates district of Syria and then to Mosul in Iraq. He and many other children are taught to become IS 'child soldiers. He learned to use weapon, bombs and drive a car.

During fightings in the Old City in Mosul, Tomas and the other children had to wear a suicide vest every morning when they wake up. They should be ready to attack the Iraqi army.

He and the other children were treated as slaves by IS. They had to cook and make shopping for them. They forced them to not use shoes.

In addition, they were not allowed to speak their native language, just Arabic language was allowed. Tomas even got a new Arabic name; which was Omer.

For the last week he was held underground in a tunnel with four other children, all of whom died there from starvation and thirst.

He was the only child to make it out alive. He was carried out by a surrendering ISIL fighter.

He survived on three dates a day.

Sadly, Thomas’ story is not unique. In the past few days, more and more children have been either found in the rubble or are brought out by ISIL fighters hoping to avoid retribution by releasing children.

Solin (3) was kidnapped in the summer of 2014 when she was only six months old. She now resides in Kabartū refugee camp outside of Duhok with her two sisters and three brothers. She was reunited with her mother after two years apart. Her father paid $6000 dollars to purchase her back from the Islamic state. Her mother said that when she was reunited with Solin, she didn't even recognise her.

Abudllah, Tomas father has to pay IS about 50.000 $ and managed to buy 5 of his children. Tomas was the only one that he got it back free. Solin, Tomas sister also had been kidnapped.

However he went through a lot of violence and cruelty during these years he had been kidnapped by Islamic state, with help of his family he tries to get back to normal life.
