Centro - The Historic Heart of Rio

This series of photographs focuses on the Centro Historico of Rio de Janeiro. With this series my intent is to introduce the viewer to a lesser known area of Rio that many tourists never hear about, but which has great importance to the cultural patrimony of Brazil. Rio is often seen as an overgrown beach town, but the city's history is far more complex. As the erstwhile capital of both the Kingdom of Portugal and the Brazilian Empire, Rio was left with spectacular architectural gems and small winding side streets which are a far cry from the glamorous beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana. Due to its proximity to the nearby waterfront and massive port redevelopment projects, Centro is undergoing rapid change. My goal with these photographs is to present this quieter and often overlooked face of Rio de Janeiro to the world.
