As I spent several years photographing organic farms, I recognized that each had its own small cluster of oddly displaced animals. I learned that
the animals were separated from the herd for one reason or another. While the animals were well cared for, fed and sheltered, they also appeared isolated and lonely.
I’d arrive on the farm at sunrise. After shooting the happenings in the fields, I'd visit with the critters. They were happy to see me, and I them. We'd share my breakfast and make conversation. As our trust developed, they willingly posed for portraits and I started photographing.
We (my barnyard friends and I) had a special connection, one that helped all of us reclaim a sense of purpose.
