Liminal

This series, titled “Liminal,” is composed of photographs of individuals and settings at rest stops along major highways. Through this series, I elevate this otherwise banal activity of making a quick stop to use the restroom or get a snack while traveling and show insight into this social phenomenon. I was initially drawn by the idea of the passage of travelers of various backgrounds and origins through this single location as they make their way to diverse destinations. These travelers, who are all on completely separate paths, just happen to intersect at this rest stop. No one goes to a rest stop on purpose, and no one is there to stay. It is usually the fate of an empty gas tank or a full bladder that brings travelers to these eerie locations that seem to exist on a separate plane of reality from our own, leaving the visitor with a feeling of isolation. I also elevate the rest stop location itself, calling attention to the intrigue of the concept of liminal spaces where no one is permanent.
