Just a Pack of Cards

I have created a set of digital portraits that use the inverted doubling of the "court" cards in a deck of playing cards, to build a unified but diverse (and hopefully insightful) group of pictures, showing my view of the character, interests, and psychology of my subjects, by making use of the sort of constructed backgrounds and settings that are a normal strategy in the painted portrait (whether Tudor portraits or, say, the work of Tom Phillips) but are rarely seen in photographic work. My belief is that the use of variations on a limited set of patterned "tropes" within a fixed format adds context without constraining the scope for interpretation by the viewer. Above all, however, I have done my best to create a series of pleasing visual objects.
