'LEGUMES MORTS' a work in progress by JEFF MOORFOOT Artist statement I have used this series of ongoing works to bring together a series of still lifes, made over the past three years, into a cohesive statement that brings together some of the aspects of photography that have fascinated me over the years - reference to the past, the purity of design, the search for simplicity, beauty and elegance in the mundane, and intentionally brought together as a body of work that doesn't take itself too seriously. With all of these images I have done away with the middle man ie the camera, and instead used a flatbed scanner as my capture device. In a way this process contemporises and mimics the darkroom process of making photograms which harkens back to the earliest days of photography. My vegetable garden is a rich source of subject matter, with my preference being for vegetable matter in an advanced stages of decomposition or grossly misshapen, and the close proximity to my studio indulges my proclivity to laziness. Apart from the design elements – the rounded image tops, the faux large format film borders and the graphic text elements, the images are largely un manipulated except for the tweaking of density and colour saturation. The elements that make up 'legumes morts' are all parts of larger bodies of work.
