Shepherds stop briefly in the mid-morning sun, on the dusty lanes of a village in Jodhpur.

My daughter with a girl from a Bishnoi farmer's family in a village in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Both children are nearly the same age, both are unkempt and have a similar expression.Both children belong to different worlds. Yet I found their resemblance uncanny. I found their expression of innocence universal. These are children being themselves, without any prejudice. There is no us and them!

Image of a young Malayali tribal girl from Javvadu hills of Tamilnadu. She broke all stereotypes in my mind, of how a tribal girl should look like, making me think deeper. Society stereotypes people based on their colour, looks, where they are born and so on. We compartmentalise people into them and us based on these perceptions and biases . When it comes to human emotions, we are all the same.

Thenmozhi is a transgender person, belonging to the Irula tribe in Tamilnadu. Her personality underwent a sudden transformation as soon as she joined fellow villagers in an impromptu musical night. She was there only for a few mins. Even then, she kept disappearing often, giving only glimpses into her personality. But when she sang and danced it was an electrifying presence.

Gopal is a visually impaired man belonging to the Irula tribe in Tamilnadu. One Christmas Eve, some French nationals who visit a nearby Church annually, visited the Irula hamlet. They took photos with everyone including Gopal. One of the visitors shook hands with him. This remains one of his most cherished and valuable moments in life. He recounted this with great pride and a bit of nostalgia.
