The city of Varanasi is the spiritual center of Hinduism. Located on the banks of the most sacred of rivers in India, the Ganges, it attracts millions of pilgrims each year, who believe that performing devotions and bathing in the Ganges will purify their souls. People even go to Varanasi to die and have their ashes scattered along the river. In a country like India, in which religion is intertwined in every aspect of daily life, the special status of Varanasi creates an intense and magical environment. In this project, I try to show different aspects of life along the ghats, or steps, that connect the city's alleys to the sacred river.
