Venetian Red

I've visited Venice numerous times over the years. While there are plenty of enchanting elements of the city that keep bringing me back, I'm particularly drawn to the colour of red that is omnipresent in the city. Physically, many buildings and architectural elements in the city are painted in a dark red colour, serving as backdrops for the urban space. Symbolically, red is the colour of the flag of the Republic of Venice, which can still be seen flying throughout the city or used as a recurring design motif, thus carrying a symbolic meaning of the historical heritage of the region. This series of photos is produced during my multiple trips to Venice over the years. Through this project, I intend to explore how the colour red shapes the Venetian cityscape, as well as its relationship with the people inhabiting the city today, locals and visitors alike. Through experimentation with abstraction and juxtaposition, I aim to highlight the red in unusual ways, especially how it interacts with and responds to other elements of the city.
