In this series of unaltered images, I have photographed flowers through various artist papers.
This process of working with flowers, sunlight, and paper reminded me a bit of the photogenic drawings of Anna Atkins. Our intentions could not have been more opposite. Atkins created scientific renderings. My intention was to create painterly abstractions.
This work, like the majority of contemporary photography, is printed onto photographic grade watercolor paper. This material intersection between painting and photography is a relatively new development in the history of the medium.
The image of a photograph often causes the viewer to overlook the paper it is
printed on. This series attempts to bring some attention to the paper itself.
