The origin of this series of black-and-white photographs was my desire to create images that hover on the verge between reality and abstraction. I rarely remember my dreams (and am envious of those who do) so creating these images feels to me like a bit of compensation. I construct the images by superimposing two photos, one a positive, the other a negative (inverted) image. Choosing the two images to combine becomes a matter of experimentation. In some cases the two images are the same (or similar) subject matter captured from a different distance or perspective. In other cases the two images are totally unrelated. I became intrigued with the unusual tonal range and often mysterious, surrealistic nature of the resulting combinations. I also enjoy the aleatory (random) process which led to many surprises (some pleasant, some not) when first seeing the final result.
