A memoir of photographs and text that captures the fleeting moments of the spring and summer in Manhattan before the tragedies of 9/11.
Composed of single and consecutive images held within black & white film strips, the images build a portrait of the excitement and romance of moving to New York City. The story explores our need to create and record the forever changing landscape of our reality. The film sprockets anchor the images in a time and place and speak to the evolution of art, cities and the myriad of connections we experience with each other.
These images were all shot in 2001 but it wasn't until 2015 when I revisited the work and the story presented itself in the sequence of images taken on both 35 mm film and the 120 film shot on a Holga toy camera. The film imperfections and light leaks ostensibly foreshadowing the imminent tragedies.
