After seeing multiple photo projects of blind people in which the subjects seemed to be 'defined' by their one impairment, I became interested in the challenge of capturing the 'different' ways they navigate a world that largely caters to the sighted. How do they use other senses to do every day things, or indeed accomplish feats that would surprise many sighted people. A fascinating element of this project has been watching the blind alternate between asserting independence and seeking help, and seeing their families and assistants balance vigilance and distance. I am to expand this project to other contexts, to try to capture more of how society fosters inclusion or carelessly leads to social isolation.
