When a travel abroad is also an inner journey... I am used to defining myself as "half-Moroccan". During my last trip in Morocco, I didn't feel like either a stranger or a local.
Morocco isn't really abroad for me : I have lived 6 years in Casablanca during my childhood and my father is Moroccan, but it is not really home too.
This serie expresses the identity struggle I experienced during this trip and the contradictory feelings that came along :
- feeling proud of a culture you are not fully sharing and understanding
- feeling nostalgic about a past you merely experienced
- feeling alone while surrounded by warm nature, people, relatives
- feeling authenticity, sincerity, pain, respect and honor, and trying not to be overwhelmed by your own self
I guess building identity and defining oneself is as universal as humanity.
I do think it takes a lot of hard work and courage to get to know who we are.
