The Republic of Dagestan, facing the Caspian Sea on the verge of the Caucasus, is a land of contrasts. A civilizational and religious crossroads. Derbent, the historic capital, was an important silk road stage.
Today, they are extremely remote because of the islamists terrorism who deeply penetrated this territory. A rise which completely paradoxal with the Soviet secularized heritage (human representations in Muslim cemetery) and Russian colonization (consumption of alcool even for practicing muslims).
Historically, those Caucasus mountains welcomed many different ethnics. Still today, Dagestan is most diverse territory of Russia. More than thirty ethnic groups are still recorded.
All those characteristics, conjugated with the complete absence of global tourism, made this territory fascinating.
