Due to global warming there is less and less ice in the Arctic Ocean. Shipowners consider this an opportunity. Indeed, the maritime route through the north of Siberia is much shorter than the one through the Suez Canal. However, to consider using this route intensively, it is necessary to build new ships adapted to extreme conditions of navigation in these latitudes.
In many shipyards ships using breaking through technologies are currently being built. This work documents the construction of 2 ships. In Busan in South Korea they are constructing LNG icebreaker tankers that can go through 2 meters of ice while carrying liquified gas. In the Baltisky zavod shipyard located in St Petersburg, a new class of nuclear powered ice-breaker are under construction. They are going to be the most powerful ice-breaker ever built.
