The coffee production in Costa Rica is an important part of their economy. During the coffee harvest many children are found in the fields . There were no facilities for these children to be kept while their parents worked 10 hour days so they work alongside them. Afer my first visit to these plantations I exposed this injustice and the as of today - Oct 21, 2018 - I have helped create 35 'Casa Alegrias' which are day care centers for children up to the age of 12. Costa Rica wants to be socuially conscious and because of them adopting this policy others have come aboard. We still have a long way to go but it has changed the lives of many of these young children. The coffee workers live in very poor conditions, oworking conditions are difficult and salaries are minimal. But we are continuing to make change. Casa Alegrias provide nurturing food, basic eductaional toys and playtime. Children at this age should be enjoying themselves, not working long days.
