The series' name, "Altneuland" (Old-New Land), refers to Theodor Hertzl's book from 1902, presenting his vision of the state of Israel, 46 years before its independence.
I took b&w photos from 1919 to 1979, and shot a wider photo at the same place, when the colored reality continues where the b&w photo ends The photos portray 3 different times: The old black and white photos, the present colored photos and the time that have passed between capturing both photos. The third time mentioned is not a visual one but a mental and emotional dimension, filled in by the knowledge we have on what dramatic changes have happened between the two times.
The b&w photos create a story of the state of Israel, from before and after its independence. Unlike Hertzl's book, this series, dissolving both times, leave the commentary in the viewers' hands.
