I have been traveling back and forth from NYC to Cuba for last 3 years, since Obama first re-opened our embassy there. These images represent a portion of an ongoing project where I hope to show a more intimate, thoughtful portrayal of the Cuban people who have been held in a state of suspension between resignation and hope. Cuba is a complicated island full of warmth and mystery--both an invitation and a hiding. But ultimately, Cuba provides me with unwavering evidence of what the beloved Cuban poet, Jose Martí, once wrote: "Amado será todos los que amo," All that loves will be loved. Perhaps that is why I keep going. Perhaps that is why more than my capturing Cuba, it is Cuba that in the end that has captured me. People often ask me, why, with all the vibrant colors of Cuba, do I shoot in black and white? But that's where the sweetness comes alive for me--where I see and sense more clearly what the image is trying to say.
