I am taking an objective look at the commuter experience. I want to give a visual expression to this "dead time" between life and work. My images show the existential experience of the commute. At times, this is almost appears zombi-like even when people are interacting on smart phones.
I don't mean to judge the commute in a negative way. It is simply a necessity for most kinds of work and school. I want people to see themselves in this part of their lives. I also want to show the many forms of commuting; walking, driving, trains, buses, and bicycles.
I am doing this project in 35mm black and white. I think the grain of the film helps reflect the haziness of the experience. Larger prints will bring this out more.
This idea came to me after seeing exhibits on street photography and a show of the New York Photo League photos. Also a book entitled, Photography and Politics in America by Lili Bezner. Another direct cause was work on a multimedia project that involved photographing commuters.
