"Arga" is a photographic project that takes place in the Serra d'Arga, in the northwest of Portugal, where I capture a way of life deeply connected to the land, traditions, and with profound religious beliefs. Here, time seems to stand still.
These images not only document a reality that is disappearing but also transport me to my own childhood, evoking memories where the rhythm of life was marked by the cycles of nature and the strength of the community.
Through this work, I seek to reflect the intimate connection between people and their environment. People who carry out daily tasks with wise hands and where festivals still keep ancestral beliefs alive. However, this way of life is disappearing, replaced by modernity and the abandonment of the rural world.
This project is a tribute to that way of life, a call to attention about its importance, and a reflection on what we lose when it vanishes. These photographs capture faces marked by labor, landscapes that hold stories, and details that speak of faith, effort, and resistance.
"Arga" not only aims to document but also to move. I want those who observe these photographs to feel the connection to the land, the nostalgia for the past heritage, and the urgency to preserve these memories. It is an invitation to reflect on our roots and the value of the traditions that define us. It is a visual and emotional journey to a world that is disappearing, but still beats strongly in the Serra d'Arga. A reminder that, although time moves forward, our roots and our stories deserve to be remembered and celebrated.
