Each year Gypsies, Romanies and Travelers gather in the small Cumbrian market town of Appleby to socialize, meet old acquaintances and trade horses. The horses are often washed, prior to being traded, in the River Eden which runs through the town. Potential sellers also race their ponies and traps along the'Flashing Lane' to show off to potential buyers. There is no formal organization of the 'fair' and deals are struck on the street in an 'ad hoc' fashion. Quite often large sums of money can change hands and there are often heated disputes.
