For decades, Robben Island Prison was the home of some of South Africa’s most notable political prisoners, and this is a selection from series of photographs of some of the prison cells. This is my attempt to capture the spirits of the men embedded in the textures and foundations of the rooms they were confined to in. The hopes and dreams of establishing a true democracy emerged in this very prison and its significance in the recent history of South Africa is undisputed. The prison was home to Nelson Mandela, undoubtedly one of the greatest world figures of recent memory, from where he wrote his memoirs.
