Sam Deaner embraced photography at an early age as a way to belong.
Her work centers around personal encounters that examine self awareness, motives behind personal choice, and the importance of relationships and how they impact our sense of belonging.
She began her professional career as a photojournalist and after more than a decade as an award- winning photographer, Sam turned her camera to her own life documenting the everyday moments, family rituals and transitions into constant becoming. Working with both analog and digital processes Sam is invested in slowing down her process and also engaging in historical printing techniques.
Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and featured in numerous publications including the San Francisco Chronicle and USA Today among others. She lives and works in Oakland, California.
