Showkat Nanda is a Kashmiri journalist, documentary photographer and educator whose work examines the intersections of politics, gender, and human vulnerability.
He earned his master's in Photojournalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism as a Fulbright fellow.
Showkat's career began with a self-taught mastery of a borrowed film SLR—an interest that evolved from a childhood hobby into a lifelong commitment to documenting the untold stories of his homeland. Growing up in a region defined by disappearance and loss, Nanda’s practice is rooted in the necessity of bearing witness to the daily realities of Kashmir.
He is a recipient of numerous awards including grants from Magnum Foundation, Alexia, National Geographic Society and Henry Luce Foundation. He currently works as a contributing journalist for The New York Times.
