Kellie Mattatall is a multidisciplinary artist based in the singular isthmus of Tantramar, New Brunswick on the east coast of Canada. She works across photography, painting, sculpture, and archival research to trace the remnants of forgotten stories and places. Her practice is grounded in the slow observation of time, often using landscapes as sites of emotional and historical inquiry.
This photograph was taken from a moving vehicle — an unplanned composition formed in the space between motion and stillness. As a visual artist and researcher, I often explore themes of memory, loss, and rural identity. The Orkney landscape, with its rich layers of human and natural history, offered a moment of unexpected resonance: a field of grazing sheep, a coastline fading into mist, and the haunting quiet of a place that seems untouched by urgency.
This work is an ongoing exploration of impermanence and memory in rural environments. Captured while moving through remote regions, my photographs document moments where history, land, and stillness converge in the blur of passing time. The series reflects my interest in how we remember place—especially those shaped by quiet labour, isolation, and atmospheric beauty. Each image is a fleeting archive, preserving what the eye can barely hold.
