Alejandra Carles-Tolra was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1988. Alejandra Carles-Tolra is an emerging photographer, who is currently based between Boston and Providence. She is interested in examining and raising questions about how an individual’s identity is transformed by the group they belong to, and also on how the first shapes the latter.
Alejandra received a BA in Sociology from the University of Barcelona and an MFA in Photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited internationally, most recently at the Galatea Fine Art Gallery in Boston, Valid Foto BCN Gallery in Barcelona and the Boston Young Contemporaries. She has received several awards and mentions such as 21 New & Emerging Photographers by Lens Culture, Descubrimientos PhotoEspaña 2013 and 2nd Prize winner at the Biennal for Young Artists at the Sabadell Fine Arts Academy.
Alejandra Carles-Tolra makes portraits of young Americans who have volunteered to serve in the ROTC army training program. She captures the inner-tensions created when these young people learn to assume a second persona to perform their roles as army officers.
