"Bouwe’s black-and-white street photography moves away from events, spectacle, and loud imagery. It does not seek dramatic twists or the “definitive” photograph. At the core of his work lies the minimal instant: a suspension, an unfinished gesture, an almost imperceptible presence. Ordinary moments that, when carefully isolated, reveal an unexpected depth. This approach finds a natural parallel in the logic of the haiku: “just like haikus, photographs are small moments in time captured” (Bouwe Brouwer). As in Japanese poetry, everything relies on subtraction. The images do not explain, do not guide, do not close meaning. They remove the superfluous to make space for resonance.
