About David Niu

I’m a street photographer based in Melbourne, Australia since 2007

I discovered street photography by chance during the pandemic. With a background in design and art, I always have interested in watching any kind of visual art forms including photography. I was drawn into street photography’s artistic polish, and its honesty—the unpredictability, energy, and raw humanity of the street.

After having practiced for few years , My work now focuses on candid, unscripted moments. The candid reality is what I think the most powerful part of photography provides more than any other visual art forms . I shoot in both color and black and white, each with a distinct purpose. My color photos act as a visual diary—immediate, minimally edited, and centered on human stories. For black and white, I use a dedicated monochrome camera and treat it as a separate language: more abstract, more experimental. Since I carry only one camera each day, I commit fully to whichever approach I choose, letting it shape how I see and react.

From 2024, my works have continually received international and Australian awards, appeared in group exhibitions. I was extremely horned to win the first prize of Gothenburg International photo competition 2024, the first prize of Istanbul photo festival 2024, the title of Top emerging photography of Australia 2024,
Third prize of the moment photo competition 2024. the finalist of Eyeshot Magazine photo competition 2024, 2025 . The third place of Dublin photo festival 2026, the finalist of Headon photo festival 2026 ( my series would be exhibited in Sydney in November 2026) etc. My work also exhibited in multiple cites worldwide during the past three years.

I walk the streets without expectations—only curiosity. Street photography, for me, is an ongoing search for the unexpected, where ordinary moments can suddenly reveal something extraordinary.
