Lee Musgrave lives in White Salmon , Washington, USA. He is the recipient of an Artist Trust / National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (art) and his work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions.
When he happens upon a scene that ignites his visual cortex and sends a shot of adrenalin through his veins, he instinctively reaches for his camera.
“Fate is my unknown collaborator when I encounter the unforeseen ways chance has arranged and lighted a subject or setting; striking combinations of colors and textures; conspicuous shadows; the dynamics of spontaneity and flow or a bravura of tension… all are captivating.”
Comprehensively cropping the photographs merges randomness with conscious creation, creating a balance between the forces of the rational and irrational and also highlights each subjects individual charisma.
“I use chance in an figurative way and the expressionist results almost require the observer to think “chance” for settings are in many formats and rich with historical allusions," he added.
While chance runs counter to most people’s conceptions of art, it has been a vital component of art since its very beginning.
“My success in photographing chance created nature settings and constructed abstract subjects comes from the fact that my interest in them came long before my interest in photography … it has been a passion of mine since my childhood. That devotion is probably what enables me to capture engaging photographs from common everyday settings and subjects.”
Several of Musgrave's award winning photographs were featured in the 2016 Berlin Foto Biennale and two of his most recent works were amongst the selected finalists for The Royal Photographic Society's 2016 International Print Exhibition ... plus 6 pages of the inaugural issue of Create Magazine are filled with text and images about his photography. "I'm also very grateful that the 2017 Anniversary edition of LandEscape Art Review, includes photos and an extensive interview concerning my approach to photography," said Musgrave.
