I photograph people living their lives in public. The nooks and crannies of life are my subjects rather than the extravagant, spectacular or dramatic. Exploring neighborhoods, stores, cafes, parks, public buildings and life along most any street is what I choose to do. I am drawn to photograph people, places and situations to which I feel a connection, which may be positive or negative. I try to move beyond the cliché to photograph the unique or unexpected within everyday life. I walk a lot and look for action or find a place where I like the atmosphere and wait for something to happen. I do not hide, but rather try to blend with other people and work quietly and respectfully, hoping something will happen that I want to photograph. My objective is images that are good enough as art that people want to look at them and that suggest a bit of a story. Trying to make art from everyday life, I never know what it will look like. Being surprised is the big attraction.
Magnum photographer Josef Koudelka says he can tell a good photographer by the condition of his shoes. Mr. Koudelka would be pleased to see my shoes. I walk a lot.
